Description

Highly filled low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) and halogen-free flame-retardant (HFFR) cable compounds often present processing challenges due to high loadings of mineral flame retardants such as aluminum trihydrate (ATH) and magnesium hydroxide (MDH). Poor filler dispersion, increased extrusion torque, elevated die pressure, and die drool can affect processing efficiency and cable surface quality.

SILIKE Silicone Masterbatch LYSI-401 is a pelletized processing aid and surface modifier containing 50% ultra-high-molecular-weight siloxane polymer dispersed in a polyethylene carrier. Designed for PE-compatible polymer systems, it can help improve ATH/MDH filler dispersion and melt processability, reduce extrusion resistance and die drool, and support more stable extrusion and potentially higher throughput in suitable cable formulations.

In addition to processing improvements, LYSI-401 can help enhance surface lubricity, reduce the coefficient of friction (COF), and improve scratch and abrasion resistance. These benefits are relevant to cable insulation and sheathing compounds where surface smoothness, friction control, and wear performance are important. The extent of improvement depends on the polymer formulation, addition level, and processing conditions.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Processing Aids for Highly Filled LSZH/HFFR Cable Compounds

1. What processing additive is suitable for LLDPE/EVA/ATH highly filled LSZH cable compounds?

Highly filled LLDPE/EVA-based LSZH cable compounds, particularly those containing 50–65 wt% ATH or MDH flame retardants, can present challenges in filler dispersion, melt flow, and extrusion stability. SILIKE Silicone Masterbatch LYSI-401 contains 50% ultra-high-molecular-weight siloxane polymer and can be evaluated as a processing aid in PE-compatible formulations. Suitability depends on the polymer blend, filler characteristics, and processing requirements.

2. How can ATH/MDH filler dispersion and melt rheology be improved in HFFR cable compounding?

High mineral filler loading can increase compound viscosity and processing resistance, making uniform filler distribution more difficult. Silicone processing aids such as LYSI-401 may help improve filler wetting and dispersion during compounding while supporting more favorable melt-processing behavior. Improvements in filler dispersion and rheology should be assessed separately through appropriate compound testing.

3. Can silicone processing aids help reduce thermal degradation during ATH/MDH-filled cable extrusion?

Processing aids may help reduce extrusion resistance and, under suitable conditions, allow adjustments to processing temperature or mechanical load. This can contribute to better management of thermal stress during compounding and extrusion.

However, the thermal decomposition behavior of ATH and MDH depends primarily on their chemistry, temperature exposure, and residence time. LYSI-401 should not be assumed to prevent flame-retardant decomposition without application-specific thermal evaluation.

4. How can extrusion die pressure and die drool be reduced in highly filled LSZH/HFFR cable compounds?

High ATH/MDH loading can increase extrusion resistance and contribute to die deposits and unstable melt flow. LYSI-401 can help improve processing lubrication and melt flow in compatible formulations, potentially reducing die pressure and die drool. The extent of improvement depends on filler loading, compound composition, die design, and operating conditions.

5. Can silicone masterbatch support higher extrusion line speeds for small-diameter automotive wires and cables?

Silicone processing aids may support higher extrusion line speeds by improving compound processability and reducing extrusion resistance. LYSI-401 can be evaluated in suitable PE-compatible automotive wire and cable compounds where processing efficiency and surface quality are important.

The achievable line speed should be verified through production trials, with attention to diameter consistency, extrusion stability, cable surface quality, and applicable automotive cable specifications.

6. Can silicone processing aids improve cable scratch and abrasion resistance while reducing surface migration?

Ultra-high-molecular-weight silicone masterbatches may help improve surface lubricity, scratch resistance, and abrasion resistance in compatible cable compounds. LYSI-401 may also offer a reduced tendency toward additive migration or surface exudation compared with certain lower-molecular-weight lubricants.

These properties depend on the formulation, addition level, and service conditions. Comparative testing should include surface friction, abrasion resistance, aging behavior, and relevant final cable requirements.
