Description

SILIKE SILIMER 9700 is a PFAS-free and silicone-free active polymer processing aid (PPA) developed to improve the processability and extrusion performance of polyolefin resins. Unlike silicone-based PFAS-free PPAs, it provides an alternative processing aid chemistry for applications where both PFAS-free and silicone-free formulations are required.

During extrusion, the functional components of SILIMER 9700 can migrate toward processing equipment surfaces, helping improve lubrication at the polymer–metal interface. This mechanism is intended to reduce friction-related processing difficulties, improve resin flow, and support more stable extrusion under suitable operating conditions.

SILIMER 9700 is designed to help reduce extrusion torque, melt fracture, sharkskin, and material deposits on processing equipment, including the screw, barrel, filter screen, and die head. By helping control deposit formation and extrusion-related surface defects, it may support longer continuous production runs, less frequent equipment cleaning, and improved extrudate appearance.

As an active processing aid, SILIMER 9700 offers formulation flexibility for polymer compounders and masterbatch manufacturers. It can be incorporated into compatible polymer formulations or used to prepare customized processing aid masterbatches.

Application areas

SILIMER 9700 is designed for polyolefin processing and extrusion applications, including blown film extrusion, fiber and monofilament production, pipe extrusion, sheet and plate extrusion, and selected wire and cable applications. It can also be evaluated in specialized polyolefin formulations requiring improved melt flow, reduced die build-up, and better extrudate surface quality. Suitability depends on the resin formulation, processing conditions, and application-specific requirements.

Typical benefits

1. Improved Melt Flow & Reduced Processing Torque

Helps improve resin fluidity and processing lubricity while reducing extrusion torque, supporting smoother and more stable polyolefin processing.

2. Reduced Melt Fracture & Sharkskin

Helps minimize melt fracture and sharkskin defects, supporting smoother extrudate surfaces and reducing the risk of film breaks under suitable processing conditions.

3. Reduced Material Deposits & Longer Production Runs

Helps reduce material accumulation and carbonaceous deposits on the screw, barrel, filter screen, and die head, potentially extending continuous production runs and reducing cleaning-related downtime.

4. Improved Surface Quality & Gloss

Helps improve extrudate surface smoothness, reduce visible surface defects, and enhance surface gloss under suitable processing conditions.

5. Maintained Resin Properties & Downstream Performance

Designed to improve extrusion processability without adversely affecting the resin's physical properties or the finished product's bonding, printing, and heat-sealing performance. Compatibility should be confirmed in the target formulation.

6. PFAS-Free & Silicone-Free PPA Alternative

Provides a PFAS-free and silicone-free active processing aid option for polyolefin manufacturers evaluating alternatives to conventional fluorinated PPAs.

How to use

SILIMER 9700 can be premixed with resin pellets, masterbatches, powders, or other raw materials before processing, or incorporated at an appropriate dosage during masterbatch production.

The general recommended addition level is 0.1–4.0 wt%, depending on the polymer formulation and processing requirements.

For applications focused on improving processing lubricity, reducing die build-up, or evaluating alternatives to fluorinated PPAs, an initial trial dosage of 0.1–1.0 wt% is recommended.

The optimum dosage should be determined through application-specific trials based on the resin system, extrusion conditions, and target processing performance.

Transportation & Storage

This product could be transported as non-hazardous chemical. It is recommended to be stored in a dry and cool area with a storage temperature below 50°C to avoid agglomeration. The package must be well sealed after each use to prevent the product from being affected by moisture.

Package & Shelf life

The standard packaging is a paper box with a PE inner bag, with a net weight of 25 kg. Original characteristics remain intact for 24 months from the production date if kept under the recommended storage conditions.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About PFAS-Free & Silicone-Free PPA for Polyolefin Extrusion | SILIMER 9700

1. How do I choose a PFAS-free PPA when my formulation also requires silicone-free additives?

Not all PFAS-free polymer processing aids are silicone-free. Some use silicone-based technology, which may not meet specific formulation restrictions.

For applications requiring both PFAS-free and silicone-free chemistry, SILIMER 9700 provides an alternative active processing aid for evaluation in compatible polyolefin formulations. Selection should consider the customer's chemical specifications, resin compatibility, and required extrusion performance.

2. Why do sharkskin and die build-up sometimes persist after switching to a PFAS-free PPA?

Sharkskin and die build-up can result from several factors, including polymer rheology, excessive shear stress, die design, processing temperature, resin degradation, and additive compatibility.

If these problems persist after replacing a fluorinated PPA, the formulation and extrusion conditions should be reviewed together. SILIMER 9700 can be evaluated as part of a controlled processing optimization trial to determine whether it helps reduce these defects.

3. How should I compare SILIMER 9700 with my existing fluorinated PPA during production trials?

A comparative trial should use consistent resin formulations, extrusion equipment, and operating conditions, while allowing for proper purging and process stabilization.

Key evaluation parameters include melt fracture clearance, die build-up over time, extrusion pressure, processing torque, continuous operating stability, and final product quality.

These measurements help determine whether SILIMER 9700 can meet the processing requirements of a specific production line rather than relying solely on initial extrusion appearance.

4. Can SILIMER 9700 improve extrusion processing without compromising printing, bonding, or heat-sealing performance?

SILIMER 9700 is designed to improve extrusion processability while maintaining the resin's physical properties and supporting downstream performance, including printing, bonding, and heat sealing.

For applications where these properties are critical, comparative testing of print adhesion, bonding strength, heat-seal performance, and relevant physical properties is recommended to confirm compatibility with the final formulation.

5. Should I choose SILIMER 9700 active processing aid or SILIMER 9701 PPA masterbatch?

The choice depends on the formulation requirements and additive incorporation process.

SILIMER 9700, supplied in active additive form, offers flexibility for polymer compounders and masterbatch manufacturers developing customized formulations.

SILIMER 9701, supplied in masterbatch form, provides a carrier-based processing aid option for compatible extrusion processes.

Selection should consider carrier resin compatibility, feeding and dispersion requirements, additive concentration, and processing conditions.

6. What information should I provide to evaluate SILIMER 9700 for my extrusion process?

To assess the suitability of SILIMER 9700, it is helpful to provide the following application details:

• Polymer type and resin grade, including melt flow properties

• Formulation components, including fillers and other additives

• Extrusion process, equipment, and operating conditions

• Current processing aid and addition level, if applicable

• Main processing challenges, such as sharkskin, die build-up, or excessive torque

• Target improvements and critical downstream performance requirements

Based on these details, SILIKE's technical team can help discuss suitable evaluation conditions, technical documentation, and sample testing options.
